Below are the details of this post production internship:

-Must intern in exchange for college credit;

-Must have a working vehicle to get to and from internship.

Thank you very much!

Animation Consistent at the Box Office

No matter how you slice it, animated films have been amazingly consistent with domestic box office:

The Lorax – $214,030,500

Madagascar 3: Escape to Europe – $211,252,716

Brave – $225,967,000

Ice Age: Continental Drift – $139,339,000
The U.S./Canada under-performer appears to be the latest installment of Ice Age, but “under performance” is a relative term. The feature will end up in the neighborhood of $150 million, and everywhere else in the known world it’s making the turnstiles twirl at a high rate of speed.

Congrats to our Industry Specialist Brian Wallace!

Congratulations to instructor Brian Wallace (Industry Specialist for LAFS/LARS), who has a track titled “Goodbye” by David Ramirez that has reached #5 on the charts on iTunes  (http://www.davidramirezmusic.com/)

Click here for the record on iTunes

A little backstory..

Back in August 2011 David Ramirez was on tour and had some new songs he wanted to record while in LA. Brian grabbed some LAFS and LARS students: Jessica Malumay, Eric Becerra, Daniel Soloman, Irving Anguilano, (amongst others) and recorded the track on campus and used it as a demo. Later that track was chosen for his new record, which was released today. The final cut was remixed and remastered but still the core track was recorded with our very own students! Now it’s #5 on the charts and we are super proud of everyone involved!

Recap of “Lawless” Screening and Q&A

Monday night The Los Angeles Film School welcomed two amazing people to our campus, Director John Hillcoat and prolific author and songwriter Nick Cave.  We are grateful to Iris Green in the media center for coordinating this event, as it’s always a pleasure to hear first hand accounts of those behind the films. As a staff member, I couldn’t be anymore ecstatic about this being a fan of both of their collected works. John Hillcoat has some amazing credits in the music video field doing work with such bands as Siouxsie & The Banshees, Placebo, Depeche Mode and AFI. My favorite of them all happened to be his video for Nick Cave’s  ‘Babe, I’m on Fire’, which I’m sure lead the pair to their relationship later for Hillcoat’s 2008 feature film The Proposition. An amazing western film written by Cave that set a great tone for both of them and also a spectacular soundtrack scored by Cave and Warren Ellis of the Bad Seeds.

In Lawless Hillcoat and Cave once again paint another dusty story set in the early 1900’s of early American prohibition and racketeering in the Blue Ridge Foothills of Virginia. Taken from an acclaimed novel, The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant, Cave sat down and composed an amazing screenplay in a little over a week. Hillcoat noted that production took about 42 days, which to me both are a real tight schedule but have resulted in a genuine masterpiece.

Definitely the highlight aside from the film itself was Jeff Goldsmith’s Q & A with Hillcoat and Cave. I was hanging on every story, answer and facts about their collected and separate works. Both were very distinguished and did not hold back any of the details that went into creating Lawless from changing the ending a few times, to cutting back on a huge production. These details were fascinating to hear as seeing that Lawless is a very tight story with very precise characters that all intertwined with one another. Another key role discussed was the music, which frankly as a fan totally enamored me from the first frame with rich warm sounds & bluegrass undertones. Nick spoke on how Warren Ellis had created several loops of different musical soundscapes and from there they improvised the rest over 6 days in the studio. As a musician and composer myself I was impressed to hear that in that time they created something so texturally beautiful and heartfelt.

The night closed with a small Q & A from the students & staff, which also was a defining touch to the event itself. Having students interact with the creators on a one on one basis, and hearing answers straight from the creators themselves, which is way too cool. Hillcoat even went into details of his filming style, his preferences, his follies and as well as his achievements. I really felt that these are the kind of things that students want to hear and take in from these screenings as they continue their education. Even myself as a staff member, I walk away with influence and knowledge on my own future endeavors. This has to be one of the best perks of being a student here so always come and take advantage of these screenings! You’ll never know whom you might meet and what you might see!

Interview with LAFS Computer Animation Alum Josh Harris

Having a professional mindset while in school is extremely beneficial – just ask Josh Harris, he was offered a job as a 2D Texture Artist at S2Games before graduating! Even more remarkable is how he was promoted to a 3D Character Modeler before even starting! Josh credits a lot of his success to his time in the United States Marine Corps and here at The Los Angeles Film School; Josh was Salutatorian of his Computer Animation class.

“The mindset you are taught in the Marines is that ‘you must succeed’ and ‘failure is not an option.’ Having that mindset before going into the program really helped,” Josh explains.

By focusing on the work and keeping a positive attitude, Josh was able to produce industry-quality work while still in school, thus building his portfolio and making him a perfect candidate for a company like S2Games. Josh says, “I had the work that show[ed] I could do the job.”

Before attending LAFS, Josh did not have any experience in CG Modeling or animation. Josh explains how this was not an issue or hindrance because “the instructors teach you a lot in a short period of time, so it all just clicks.” What benefited him most was having multiple sets of eyes on his work – all industry professionals – so he was able to catch-on really quickly and receive instant feedback. Josh says another great aspect of attending LAFS is that “the environment here is so creative. There are always people working on something, whether it’s in animation, film or recording. Being around others who are working on their own projects is inspiring. I ended up teaming up with another vet – Andre Andrews- to design a nightlife app he created. That’s just one of  so many benefits of being here.”

Josh’s favorite aspect of animation is character design and 2D and 3D modeling. As far as movies go, anything with CG work is stellar. For games, he enjoys the art in the Warcraft series. What stands out most about Josh is his positive attitude – he’s definitely the kind of person you would want to hang with and get to know, which is key in moving forward in the industry. Most notably, instead of using Facebook to just chat and look at pictures, he used it as a networking tool to get in touch with potential employers. That outlook is just one of the many great reasons he landed the job he has today. We can expect to see more of his success in the near future.

Watch his on-camera interview here.
