Student Spotlight: Marshaun “Mars” White in the Film Program
Posted on March 4, 2013 by respiritu
Marshaun White is in his 8th Month Production 2 class in the film program here at LA Film School. Everyone calls him “Mars” as that is his Directors name and what he uses in all his work. Mars has been busy networking and building his brand “FlightLife Films” by utilizing social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. He has been able to build buzz and a substantial fan base, which has opened up doors for collaborations and projects. All his work is independent, so despite being able to assemble a full film crew or shoot with a big budget, he has still shot many guerrilla videos with great cinematic quality. Mars consistently uses the knowledge being taught in class out in the field, and it is shown in his work. He shoots and edits everything using AVID Media Composer.
Previous work includes filming shows of hip hop artists such as Curren$y, Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy, Schoolboy Q, Stalley, King Chip, Casey Veggies, and Jhene Aiko. Over the past three years he’s done music videos, documentaries, events, live performances, trailers, and promotional videos.
Check out his YouTube page: www.youtube.com/TheFlightLife to see samples of his work. He also has a lot posted on his Tumblr blog at flightlifefilms.tumblr.com.
The most recent project Mars has been working on is a collaboration with Sir Michael Rocks of The Cool Kids. “He has believed in my vision and personally brought me in to work with him on viral videos, pictures and any kind of creative visual.” Mars explains. They have traveled to Las Vegas and Houston filming behind the scenes footage and events hosted by his independent label ONE OFF Music Group. Check out the promo trailer for Sir Michael Rocks’ upcoming EP titled “Banco”, which has been featured on sites such as World Star Hip Hop, Complex, Vibe and more.
In describing the equipment and process of making films, Mars goes into further detail:
I shoot all of my videos on a Canon Rebel T3i . Along with a small assortment of lens options and 1 simple LED light that mounts on top of the DSLR, I have managed to learn enough about Apertures, ISOs, & Shutter Speeds to know how to achieve the best possible video quality with the equipment I have to work with. I want to show people that you don’t need all of the top notch equipment that most people can’t afford if you really understand how to use the equipment and lenses.
